Azure Husbandry Juicing Apples, Transitional
Big apple flavor doesn’t require a picture-perfect apple! Azure Husbandry Transitional Juicing Apples are a seasonal assortment of orchard apples that may be too small, oddly shaped, blemished, or otherwise less than perfect in appearance for our standard fresh-market packs—but they still have plenty to offer in the kitchen.
These apples are selected as “juicers” during sorting and packing. As freshly harvested apples move through our packing line, fruit that doesn’t meet our preferred standards for size or appearance is sorted into our juicing grade. Instead of letting perfectly useful fruit go to waste, we offer these apples as an economical option for juicing, saucing, baking, preserving, and other recipes where appearance simply doesn’t matter.
What Variety Will I Receive?
The variety will change throughout the harvest season based on what Azure Husbandry apples are being picked and packed at the time.
Your order may contain seconds from the variety currently being harvested or a combination of available varieties. Because of this seasonal variation, the apples’ color, size, sweetness, tartness, firmness, and juicing characteristics may differ from one order to the next.
That’s part of what makes this a true harvest-season product—you’re getting what the orchard is producing right now!
Perfectly Imperfect
Juicing apples aren't selected for their looks. You may find apples that are:
- Smaller than standard fresh-market apples
- Irregularly shaped
- Blemished or cosmetically imperfect
- Variable in color or size
- A mixture of available harvest varieties
These natural imperfections make them especially well suited for uses where the apples will be pressed, chopped, cooked, blended, or preserved.
As with any fresh produce, inspect your apples before use and trim away bruised or damaged areas as appropriate.
More Than Just Juicing
Don't let the name limit you! While these apples are an excellent choice for fresh-pressed apple juice or cider, they're also a versatile and economical option for many apple recipes.
Try them for:
- Fresh-pressed apple juice
- Homemade apple cider
- Applesauce
- Apple butter
- Pies, crisps, cobblers, and baked desserts
- Dehydrated apple slices
- Canning and preserving
- Chutneys and sauces
- Freezing for future recipes
Different apple varieties bring different levels of sweetness, tartness, aroma, and acidity, so a seasonal assortment can create wonderfully complex flavor in juice, cider, and applesauce.
Transitional – Growing Toward Organic Certification
These apples are Transitional, meaning they come from orchard ground that is in the transition toward organic certification. The orchard is being managed according to organic production requirements while completing the required transition period before the fruit can be sold as certified organic.
Choosing transitional fruit is a great way to enjoy the harvest while supporting the continued transition of farmland toward certified organic production.
Keeping Your Apples Fresh
Azure keeps fresh produce chilled to help maintain quality and extend shelf life. Once you receive your apples, refrigerate them promptly and keep them refrigerated until you're ready to use them.
For best results:
- Keep apples refrigerated rather than in a countertop fruit bowl.
- Wash apples only when you're ready to use them.
- Sort through larger quantities periodically and use softer or more blemished apples first.
- Remove any fruit showing significant deterioration to help protect the quality of the remaining apples.
With proper refrigerated storage, you'll be able to enjoy your harvest for much longer than if the apples are kept at room temperature.
A Practical Way to Enjoy More of the Harvest
Azure Husbandry Transitional Juicing Apples celebrate the perfectly imperfect side of orchard harvest. They may not all look alike, but that's exactly the point—these apples give delicious, useful fruit a purpose while offering customers a practical choice for juicing, cooking, baking, and preserving.
